From 20 to 23 of November 2017, professor Marcelo Gottschalk from the University of Montreal (Canada) toured Asia, providing Ceva’s swine customers with an overview of the latest knowledge about Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP). APP is a highly relevant lung disease in finishing pigs around the world, including Asia.
Professor Gottschalk is the leading global expert in this field, and author of an impressive amount of scientific papers. He is also Director of the international reference laboratory of serology for swine pleuropneumonia, and author of the chapter dedicated to Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae in the reference book “Leman’s Diseases of Swine”.
The tour brought him to the Philippines (a presentation for key opinion leaders and an exclusive symposium for the staff of San Miguel Food Industries), Vietnam and Thailand (two “APP 360 degrees”-symposiums; one for academia and interested swine vets, and a second for veterinarians of the Thai Food Group).
Successful for customers and Ceva
During his Ceva-sponsored tour through our region, professor Gottschalk helped regional veterinarians updating their knowledge about diagnostics of APP (among others he revealed the discovery of 3 new serotypes), and provided practical solutions for controlling the disease. Vaccination is a major aid in reducing losses associated with APP; Ceva is producer of Coglapix®, the leading APP vaccine in South-East Asia.
